about ssds
Meet the team.

Bridget Soyka-Smith's passion for design all began in Canfield, Ohio in 1972 when her mother hired an interior designer for their home. Bridget got to select all the details of her bedroom--wallpaper, flooring, fabrics and of course--furniture. Sparks flew. She fell in love with the design process.

During her time at the University of Cincinnati, Bridget’s affection for interior design was matched by her curiosity for architecture. She decided to incorporate both as part of her college career, interning with prestigious firms like SOM & HOK and graduating with a B.S. in Interior Architecture from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, & Planning.
Following her graduation in 1983, Bridget ventured to California—working for Federated Department Stores as a Sr. Project Designer. She went on to work for Cole Martinez Curtis and then Austin Hanson Group where she was named Associate. Bridget grew to be an International Marketing Director—opening AHG’s first international office in Hong Kong in collaboration with M. Moser Associates. For two years, she worked in Hong Kong and Taiwan developing corporate design presence.

You’re probably wondering how Bridget ended up in New Jersey! Well, her love for her work is only superseded by her love for her family. In 1991, she planted roots in Montclair, NJ . She welcomed her first son, Connor, and began working as the Vice President of Design and Marketing for Hodkinson Associates (because women can do it all!). In 1999, after 8 successful years with HA, over 150 library projects, and welcoming her second son, Stefan, Bridget decided to branch off on her own. Her third child was born (just kidding...kind of!)—Soyka Smith Design Studios!

For over 20 years, Bridget has continued to reimagine libraries while expanding SSDS's portfolio to include the K-12 market, Higher Education, and Municipality spaces. Her attention to detail and ability to see the "big picture" creates an experience for clients that far surpasses "buying furniture". She leads with design in mind and through the lens of the client to create beautiful spaces that meet (and exceed!) expectations.

When Bridget isn't working (which isn't often!), you can find her traveling with friends, catching a broadway show in the city, hanging out with her kids and grandkids, or lounging with her two fur babies, Mickey and Marshall!
